The charming old German town of Fredericksburg serves as the perfect home-base for exploring the Texas Hill Country. Located about 1.5hrs west of Austin, Fredericksburg has a bustling Main Street, great hikes and outdoor adventures nearby, and wineries all around it. Let’s take a look at the best things to do in Fredericksburg:
- Sip Vino! Fredericksburg is in the heart of Texas Wine Country with over 50 wineries within a short drive. Our favorite two are William Chris Vineyards & Augusta Vin.
- Go Antique-ing: This region of the Lone Star State is famous for its world-class antique shops. Find your inner Chip & Joanna Gaines and seek out one-of-a-kind treasures at places like Lōft or Carol Hicks Bolton Antiquities.
- Walk Main Street: Spend a half day strolling the character-filled streets of downtown Fredericksburg. Pop into the hot-sauce-haven that is Rustlin’ Rob’s Texas Gourmet Food and then grab a cup of Joe from Java Ranch Espresso Bar & Cafe.
- Lunch at Woener Warehouse: Enjoy a really tasty sandwich in the middle of antique shop!
- Dinner at Otto’s German Bistro: Score a table (reservations recommended) at the best restaurant in town to dine on creative, chef-driven German cuisine.
- Visit the Pacific War Museum: This museum is outstanding – hands down one of the best in the country. With over 50,000 square feet of exhibit space, the museum provides an incredibly well-presented, detailed look at the Pacific Front of World War II and Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was from Fredericksburg.
- Hike Enchanted Rock: This beautiful pink granite mountain boasts 11 miles of beautiful trail hikes to choose from. It’s located about 25 min north of Fredericksburg – find more details on our Enchanted Rock post: here.
- Visit Luckenbach: “Everybody’s Somebody in Luckenbach”. Willie, Waylon, Lyle and many more country music legends have graced the stage in Luckenbach – population 3. The town lies just 15 minutes from Fredericksburg and consists of a saloon + general store, outdoor stage, and dance hall.
