Let us tell you about the dreamiest beachfront villa in Mexico, where you can wake up – walk directly out of your door, onto the sand, and into the sea. Casa Mariposa lies on Isla Holbox, a 1.5 hr drive and 25 minute ferry ride from the Cancun Airport. This beloved island is known for its clear Caribbean-esque water, laidback island vibe, and – interestingly enough – whale sharks! It’s one of the best places in the world to see and swim with whale sharks (June-Sept season). The beaches and shallow waters around Isla Holbox are just so lovely, we’re surprised we don’t hear about the destination more often – but I guess that’s a good thing for those who know about it!
As far as location on Isla Holbox, you can’t beat Casa Mariposa. The 6-bedroom / 6 bathroom rental villa is situated in a prime beachfront location, walkable to many of the islands best restaurants, artisan stores, and coffee shops.
The villa has a dividing wall down the middle, with 3 bedrooms plus a kitchen and living room on one side, and 3 bedrooms plus a kitchen and living room on the other side. In the back, you’ll find a private pool and deck area that leads to the private beachfront – complete with sun-loungers and daybed swing. It’s literally just steps from the villa to the sea!
We spent most of our days going back and forth from the sea to the sun-loungers. The beach at the property is just perfect – it has shallow clear water for days, so you can bob in the water for hours talking with friends or family with a cocktail in hand. Come lunch time, just head next door to the Beach Club at Hotel Zomay. You don’t even have to put shoes on meander over and grab tacos de camarones and a fresh margarita.
The entire islands operates via golf cart or Kawasaki Mule – barely any cars! So when you want to head somewhere that’s not really walkable, just go across the street to the neighboring hotel and ask for a taxi! Zipping around in a Mule or golf cart is a fun way to get around and see the town.
We highly recommend a stay at Casa Mariposa, especially if you want a beachfront option somewhere. Location is everything – and Casa Mariposa does not disappoint! We loved that the house also comes with a concierge (Guada!) and daily housekeeping.
