Shelter Island has quickly become one of our favorite summer escapes with the addition of the newly renovated boutique hotel, The Chequit. Laid-back and unspoiled, the island strikes a refreshing contrast to scene-y neighbors, like the Hamptons and Montauk. The Chequit has undoubtedly made a mark on the island with it’s charming character and beach-chic style.
The luxury boutique hotel is both a designer’s dream and an Instagrammer’s paradise. Kevin O’Shea and David Bowd of Salt Hotels took great care to consider every detail of the property, from the oasis-like front porch to the sleek white subway tiles in the bathrooms. The style – Salt Style – is the core of the Salt Hotels, so much so that they rightfully refer to it as the ‘soul’ of their properties.
Bright and cheery, each of the 37 guest rooms at The Chequit are beautifully appointed with subtle, yet sophisticated decor. Pink and grey painted walls set the stage for a dreamy, peaceful abode, where relaxation is the ultimate goal. In the room’s sitting area, vintage furniture with brass accents lie atop a boldly patterned rug. The deep navy colors of the rug offset the feminine dusty-pink velvet pillows and give a punch of pizzaz to the otherwise simple stylings. A reclaimed wood ladder rests alone on the wall with a bamboo sun hat and turkish towel hanging from the sides. The decor works so well and each tiny detail brings the big picture into focus.
While the rooms lure you into a dream-like state, it’s that common areas of the hotel that allow you sit back and soak in the laid-back, charming nature of the island. Two rich lemon-yellow couches greet you in the main parlor room – a space that is sophisticated without a hint of stuffiness. A piano sits in the back corner next to the fire place, making for a lovely evening cocktail spot. Outside, the front porch is dotted in wicker sofas, rocking chairs, and a brightly colored day bed – a focal point of The Chequit experience. Guests can curl up on the veranda with a good book and pot of tea as the subtle sea breeze sweeps through.
Undoubtedly, the thoughtful design and chic decor are a few of the reasons the property has caught the eye of big names like Vogue, Travel + Leisure, and Conde Nast. Lucky for us, the Salt Style extends beyond just the walls of the hotel. The Salt Supply shop opened at The Chequit this summer, offering a curated selection of home decor, beach accessories and lifestyle goods. Inspired by their playful, coastal style you can find everything from pastel-colored Turkish Towels to chic white lanterns for your home. The fun space teams with unique and colorful pieces from artisans and craftsman. We love that you can take a slice of their signature style home with you.
