Nothing surprises us anymore, but seeing an old-school airsteam trailer advertising tacos and burritos on the South Street Seaport got our attention. We had to investigate and are so glad we did because after two bites we knew it belonged on our list of best Mexican spots in the City.

Good Mexican food – like really good Mexican food – can be hard to find in these parts. But, alas, El Luchador delivers delicious fare in a chill, laid back atmosphere.  Serving over-the-counter Mexican on the corner of South Street and John Street, the eatery may be tiny in size but it packs some big flavors. The menu is simple, straightforward, and authentic. You won’t find any of those trying-to-be-fancy Mexican dishes that some restaurants have recently been reaching to make happen (eh hem, Cosme). The tacos are tasty and juicy, especially the carnitas and beer battered cod. For the sloppy eaters out there, you can order with a double tortilla to help hold everything in.

When it’s on a menu, we can’t NOT order Mexican street corn. El Luchador’s version is the stuff corn dreams are made of. Salsa is also a key barometer for some delish Mexican. Here, it’s incredibly fresh and flavorful, teaming with lim-y, cilantro-y goodness. Luckily, they serve a healthy portion so you can take it home and finish it later.
