Queue the music. David Chang…will you marry me?
After one bite of the spicy chicken sandwich at Chang’s new East Village spot, you might be stepping in line to propose, too. Fuku is the most recent endeavor by the famed young chef, and we are so grateful that his insanely good fried chicken is much more accessible now. Pre-Fuku, the only way to get Chang’s chicken was to get down and pray that the Internet Gods would help you click fast enough to score a coveted online reservation for the Fried Chicken Dinner at Momofuku Noodle Bar. That experience is – of course – amazing, but it’s a difficult table to snag and you have to be in a group. Fuku is a lunch-time only spot, where you can just walk in and grab the chicken sandwich.
The Fuku food menu is simple: order the spicy chicken sandwich solo – or – add fries or salad. The delicious sandwich is served on a soft, pillowy bun with a hint of lightly-flavored pickles inside. The chicken, though, is what it’s all about. It’s succulent, spicy, perfectly fatty, and lightly crispy – all at once. Pure satisfaction. There is one rule at Fuku – absolutely no substitutions are allowed. That’s not upsetting though, because why would you want to mess with Chang’s (your future spouse’s) genius?
Fuku has a drinks menu that is five times as long as the food menu. You’ll completely dig thirst quenchers like a Michelada, Gin & Tonic, and a Daiquiri Royale. After you’ve ordered at the counter, find a place to stand (seats are for babies) in the small space while you wait. We recommend adding a healthy squeeze of the Ssäm sauce that’s scattered around the counters – then close your eyes and enjoy the next few minutes in fried chicken Heaven.
GET THE: Only thing you can get – the sandwich. And a Michelada, of course.
