Hotel Esencia

Tulum, Mexico

Every now and then we get to visit a hotel that’s been on our bucket list for years. Hotel Esencia, in Tulum Mexico, is one of those properties and it exceeded any expectations we may have had.

Hidden away in the jungle and set right on a gorgeous stretch of beach, this boutique property is a stunning, secluded gem in the otherwise touristy bit of Tulum. When we visited in the shoulder season, there were only a few other guests and we were doted on by the staff.

A dozen or so beach palapas speckle the sand, with buttons to press for chair side service, while enjoying the gentle sounds of the calm sea kissing the sand just steps away. We enjoyed margaritas and lunch right here, while the heat dried our salty skin.

With 47 suites and 4 villas, Hotel Esencia is an ideal place for an intimate trip with friends, as a couple, or with family. Our room was huge by any standard, a plush king bed and sitting area drenched with sunlight from all the windows were the focal point. The waterfall shower was delightful after a day of swimming and since ours was a wellness suite, we had a small private gym space complete with a Peloton bike. The best part of the room was our rooftop plunge pool and sitting area. We spent afternoons reading in the hammock and enjoying a rinse in the rooftop outdoor shower.

IMG_6147Each morning, complimentary coffee and pastries are delivered to your room; enjoy them on the rooftop, on the patio just outside your door or in bed. It was a delicious start to our day, that was filled with amazing food at every meal.

With three restaurants, you’re bound to eat well while at Hotel Esencia. Featuring authentic Mexican food, a Japanese-Mexican fusion, and a steak heavy menu, each of the three restaurants invite you to enjoy something different. We recommend trying them all and going back to your favorites, as we did. Before dinner, though, we stopped at the beach bar for a cocktail and the view, and watched as a storm rolled in. A little rain doesn’t bother you so much when you’re sipping a spicy margarita!

Another highlight was the complimentary excursion to a cenote where we swam with manatees! Just a 10 minute walk and you’re greeted by the crystal clear waters of the cenote where you can kayak, paddle board or swim. A family of manatees calls this paradise home and if you’re lucky, like we were, you’ll get to see and swim with them! From check-in to check-out the service and experience at Hotel Esencia were incredible. We can’t wait to go back and bring the family!
