As far as home bases go, Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt might be the most perfect scenario. Perched on a quiet street parallel to the rowdy Rainey Street, right in the heart of downtown Austin, the location is ideal for enjoying the nightlife, exploring the art scene, and of course noshing on all the amazing food.
Walking in, the music sets the tone. We’re told some lucky soul has the job of maintaining the vibe of the hotel, through music. You’ll notice it changes throughout the day, as the energy of the guests changes, beginning chill and low in the mornings and amping up to something fun by happy hour.
Music is a huge part of the Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt, from the actual tunes floating through the air and paintings of musical icons scattered about to the chandeliers made of trumpets and the birds, made from old records, erupting from the phonograph in the sitting area.
The hotel was designed to feel like a home. Just off from the lobby is a spacious living room, with plenty of seating. To the other side, you’ll find a Cafe 605, serving coffee, snacks, and cocktails.
In our room, a giant Queen Spa Suite, there was a comfortable sitting area just in front of the huge bay window. The bathroom featured a roomy shower and gorgeous soaking tub, with complimentary bath salts just to gild the lilly.
For warm days, of which Austin has plenty, you can spend the afternoon on the fourth floor pool deck, sipping a cocktail while taking in the Austin city skyline.
Just inside from the pool deck is Geraldine’s, the hotel restaurant and bar. Usually, hotel restaurants are a thing to be skipped but that is not the case here. Not only is the food, mostly shareable small plates, amazing, but so is the vibe. Each of the 365 days of the year you can enjoy live, mostly local, music at Geraldine’s and there isn’t a seat in the place that doesn’t have a perfect view of the stage.
Kimpton Hotel Van Zandt hits all the high notes you look for when choosing a city hotel. It’s comfortable and refreshing while still being trendy and chic. No matter what the reason for the trip, this is the place to stay in the City of the Violet Crown.
Compass + Twine was a welcomed guest at this hotel and thanks them for a wonderful stay. As always, all opinions are our own.
