The capital city of Tørshavn is a great home-base for a stay in the Faroe Islands. Just about everywhere you’ll want to visit is within driving distance and, for all the foodies out there, all the good restaurants are primarily located in town. In fact, it can be a bit tricky to get food or other items elsewhere, so Tørshavn is your best bet! A large part of the appeal of the Faroe Islands is the remoteness. There aren’t a myriad of hotels to choose from, and there definitely aren’t any big Marriott-type resorts – hooray! Instead, you’ll find wonderful boutique hotels to call home during your stay, and here are our favorite two:
Hotel Havgrím
Brand new as of 2018, Hotel Havgrím is an incredibly charming sea-side boutique hotel. With only 12 rooms, they offer wonderful service and a relaxing B&B feel. Located right on the waterfront, you can wake up to beautiful views and the sound of the ocean out your window. We particularly loved the farm view out the eastern side of the property, with sheep and geese providing wonderful entertainment on the green grass below. Late April and early May visitors are treated with an extra special sight: new born lambs. There were 5 new-born lambs when we were there, and so we spent our afternoon siestas watching them frolic about and follow their mothers out the window.
At Hotel Havgím, it’s worth the extra premium to stay in the Commodore Suite. The comfortable and luxurious room boasts unbeatable panoramic views from the upper level of the hotel. The chic and cozy bathroom has a rain-shower with great water-pressure and L’Occitaine bath products. It may seem like a simple seaside spot when you first pull up, but you’ll quickly fall in love with the intimate, charming, and well-appointed boutique hotel. We certainly did.
Hotel Føroyar
This well-known 4-star property lies on the hillside above Tørshavn, with panoramic views of the city below. The sleek grass-roof design blends subtly into the surrounding nature, and the full gamut of facilities / amenities make it an ideal property for business or leisure. The lobby, lounge, and communal areas boast a modern, minimalist Scandinavian design, while the guest-rooms are little more bright and airy. The best part about the property is the view from the rooms and the little square window you can open up to the grassy hillside just outside. While the hotel is a little more busy and older than Hotel Havgrim, it offers the full array of facilities from it’s lovely hillside perch!
