Fishing has been at the core of Faroese culture for centuries and it remains their largest industry still today. All around the 18 volcanic islands you’ll notice circular nets laid out in the waters just offshore; all are salmon farms for the most part. These farms supply a lot of the fish for U.S. sushi market.
This fabled North Atlantic fishing spot runs rife with species like cod, plaice, haddock, ling, and more. So, on your next trip to the Faroe Islands, set out for a fun day of fishing with the best captain around – Magni Blástein.
Born and raised in the Faroe Islands, Capt. Magni has been fishing his whole life and is excellent at what he does. He’s extremely knowledgeable and works hard to make sure you have a successful outing! It can be chilly on the water any time of year, so Captain Magni also provides these insanely warm suits to wear that will keep you nice and toasty.
Captain Magni’s boat sets off from the marina in Vestmanna on the main island of Stremoy, about 40 minutes from Tórshavn. We spent a fun morning out on the water inshore fishing between the islands and each caught multiple cod and dab!
Afterwards, you can watch Magni fillet the fresh catch back in the marina. If you’re staying at an AirBnB, take it home with you and cook it up for a tasty, self-caught dinner. We were staying at hotel, so we put some fresh sashimi in bag for 30 minutes with a few good squeezes of lime and had ourselves a nice, uber-fresh ceviche snack!
Beyond the thrill of fishing, it’s just a beautiful experience to get out on the boat and take in rugged Faroe Islands coastline views from on the water.
