New York City is world famous for its skyscrapers, lights, and ever-present hustle and bustle. It’s loud and apparently its inhabitants never sleep. The hubbub can be overwhelming and the chaos, stressful. Allow us to remind you, dear reader, that we also have ample grassy outdoor space that just beckons you to slow down, take a load off, and have picnic. In between dining at expensive restaurants, grab a basket with some cheeses and a bottle of Rosé and head to Central Park to soak in the view.
In fact, Travel and Leisure magazine recently ranked New York as the 19th best city in the world in which to have a picnic. Personally, we’d rank it #1, but we might be a little biased. One of the great things about picnic-ing in NYC is the ease. Every block around town has a bodega for snacks and a wine store for the good stuff. To step it up a notch, grab an Italian sandwich from Parm or a pizza pie from Patsy’s to go.
In Central Park, you can plop down in Sheep’s Meadow and spend the afternoon hanging out, reading or conducting some excellent people-watching. If the city’s biggest green space gets too crowded, grab a book and head to Prospect Park in Brooklyn or Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx (the later especially for the bird-watching aficionados!). Our favorite place is downtown along the West Side Highway where the crowds are fewer, there’s a nice breeze and beautiful views along the Hudson. From there, you can walk over to Pier 25 and grab oysters at Grand Banks or play mini golf by the water. The possibilities are endless and the benefits of a little R&R and a healthy does of vitamin D are just what the doctor ordered.
