Casa Colonial, on the Dominican Republic’s North coast, is a lovely beachfront boutique hotel with an amazing rooftop pool. Walking around upon arrival, the property was even more charming than we had imagined. Set along a main stretch of golden sand and turquoise water, the hotel’s thoughtful design and private beachfront creates a feeling of complete isolation.
Casa Colonial also one of the better values we’ve come across. Flights to Puerto Plata (one of multiple airports in the DR) are easy to find and relatively inexpensive. Wheels up to touch down, it’s just a 3 hour flight from NYC and 15 minute cab to the hotel.
A member of the Small Luxury Hotel’s of the World, Casa Colonial is also quite affordable. Rates can be found as low as $275 a night. The guest rooms are spacious and romantic, each outfitted with a impressive roman-style bath tub. You definitely can’t miss the spa, which includes both steam and sauna rooms. Outside of the facilities, indulge with a beachfront massage following a day of water activities. The service was sometimes inconsistent – but we’re just nitpicking because you should be on island time anyways! Plus, the ridiculous rooftop pool area more than makes up for any minor shortcomings on service speed. The best place to familiarize yourself with is the private lounge areas next to the pool, each with their own mini plunge pool overlooking the ocean. It’ll be hard to leave.
