Italian restaurants are a dime a dozen in NYC and trendy new hot spots rarely meet all the hype. Charlie Bird, however, surprised us.
The modestly-sized eatery has a great location at the crossing of Soho and the West Village. The outside is relatively nondescript, but as soon as you walk in you know it’s going to be a good time. The space is tight, the music is loud, and the vibe is cool. That could be a bad combination at some places, but not here. You don’t mind waiting in tight quarters for your table because the wine selection is stellar, the food is all around pleasing, and you’re guaranteed to have a fun night out with friends. If you go for lunch or dinner in nice weather, you can have more space if you’re lucky enough to grab a seat in one of their signature red chairs outside.
The eclectic menu is Italian-inspired and unpretentious. It offers raw bar starters, small plates, pastas, veggies, and mains. Go with friends and sample a little bit of everything. Ear-to-ear smiles all around the table told us this meal was a success. If you’re going with a large group, they have a great private dining room. It holds up to 14 people and is one of the best in the City.
