Family Friendly, COVID Safe Things to do

Minneapolis, MN

We moved to Minneapolis two and a half years ago when we were expecting our first child. It was heartbreaking to leave New York City, but we craved a more family friendly city and needed more space.  Now, with two kids in tow, we are happier than ever that we chose to make the move here. In the summertime, you won’t find a lovelier or more vivacious city on Earth. At the first hint of warm weather, the lakes are crowded with people boating, running, and picnicking on the shores. This carries on through fall, more layers seemingly added each day to  take advantage of the sunshine as the temperature drops. But winter doesn’t shut things down here like it does elsewhere. Snowy days are just an excuse to get outside and play; hiking trails turn into cross country ski paths, fishermen sit atop the frozen lakes waiting for a bite, and even city sidewalks are buzzing with people snowshoeing and walking dogs. Minneapolis makes it easy for families to do things together, no matter the season. If you need a (safe) family outing, we’ve put together some of our favorite things to do in Minneapolis.

*Please call before going to any of these places, as some openings have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions.

Sculpture Garden at The Walker Museum: Chances are, if you’ve Googled Minneapolis, you’ve seen a sculpture from this museum already. The cherry on a spoon (called Spoonbridge & Cherry) is a favorite of photographers, as is the blue rooster. Walking beneath these towering art pieces is a fun activity for the whole family all year long.

Stroll the Gardens: The Lyndale Rose Garden on Lake Harriet and the Eloise Butler Wildflower Garden and Bird Sanctuary are two excellent options for a floral and family friendly stroll.

Walk Around a Lake: After all, Minnesota is the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes’ and there’s no better way to enjoy being outside. Some lakes, such as Lake Harriet prohibit motorized boats so instead, you’ll see kayakers and sailboats in the summer. Once the lake is frozen, look for pop up events like Art Shanty Projects where you can see fun takes on traditional ice fishing houses.

Grab a Bike: Go for a ride along the Midtown Greenway. It’s a 5.5 mile long former railroad corridor that runs though the city and makes for a lovely, scenic ride.

Bakken Museum: With installations for every age, even my 2.5year old enjoyed this museum. The museum focusing on science, technology, and the humanities and truly has something for everyone. From building blocks for kids to a whole room dedicated to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, it’s just to keep you on your toes!

Visit Minnehaha Falls: Hearing the rush of the waterfall, right in the middle of the park, will immediately relax you. Bring a picnic or grab food from Sea Salt which is just steps from the falls. Be sure to see the Song of Hiawatha statue while you’re there.

Shop 50th and France: While you’ll find big names here such as Anthropologie and Athleta, you’ll also notice small local boutiques like Oh Baby,  Bluebird Boutique, and Evereve. There are at least a dozen restaurants dotting the blocks too, if you need to refuel while you shop.

Enjoy Holidays Lights Safely: Christmas in Color is an animated drive-thru light show at Valley Fair. Fill the thermos with hot chocolate and bring a bag of pop corn for a fun, festive evening out of the house but still safely in your car!

Visit the Zoo: The Como Park Zoo & Conservatory is a wonderful idea for an afternoon activity. Plus, it’s free!
