Milos Beach Guide: The 7 Best Beaches in Milos, Greece

The beautiful, laidback island of Milos has some of the best beaches in all of Greece and it’s the perfect alternative to party-centric Mykonos or tourist-saturated Santorini. There are over 70 beaches on this beloved volcanic island in the Cyclades, each one more different than the last. From lunar-like coastlines to secluded beaches only accessible by boat (or ladder!), we’ve rounded up the top 7 best beaches on the island of Milos:

Sarakiniko

The crazy moon-like terrain, cerulean waters, and stellar cliff-jumping (*at your own risk!) make this one of the coolest beaches in the world – not just Milos! Drive your 4×4 vehicle or rent an ATV to access this unique stretch of shoreline on the northern coast. When you first approach, you’ll come upon a calm inlet beach with shallow water, sunbathers, and kids splashing around. Head around the far side of this beach to find a whole world of adventurous cliff-jumpers and cave explorers having a field day in the sparkling sea.

Tirades

Even though it’s a tiny island, the far western side of Milos remains rather remote. For those seeking quiet, scenic beaches, look no further than Tirades. Here you’ll find a series of secluded cove-like beaches with barely anyone else in sight. Bring everything you might need (water and snacks) for your time here, because there’s not much else around. A 4×4 vehicle is necessary for the journey, and on your way back, be sure to stop for a meal at the relaxed seaside taverna, Embourios.

Firopotamos

For a more lively beach day, drive north to the picturesque fishing village of Firopotamos. With pop music playing from a beverage truck, sink into one of the bean bag loungers speckled across this small stretch of sand. The bean bags are only a few euros to rent and exceptionally comfortable! With a jewel-like tone to the water and charming fishing village in sight, you couldn’t conjure up a more idyllic scene if you tried.

Tsigrado

Visiting Tsigrado Beach is not for the faint of heart, unless you arrive by boat. If you approach from land, your only option is to go down a slightly-sketchy combination of rope and ladder components placed precariously inside a narrow crevasse of the cliff. Once your toes reach the sand though, you’ll find a beautiful little beach cove and clearest of water. We suggest going on the early side since it’s a popular spot and the beachfront is pretty tiny. A backpack would be easier than a tote bag for this beach day, as you’ll probably want both arms free to help with the dicey descent.

Fyriplaka

Fyriplaka is a popular beach with both tourists and locals alike – and for good reason! Is long, stunning stretch of sand with brilliant turquoise water that stays shallow for 20+ meters out. A well organized beach, Fyriplaka has loads of palm-shaded loungers lined up along the sand and a fun beach bar to enjoy cocktails. A beautiful setting and social atmosphere make this one of the most beloved beaches on the island.

Papafragas

When you’re driving eastward, right before you reach the town of Pollonia, you’ll notice a few cavernous inlets to your left along the coastline. Pull over into one of the turnoffs and hop right into the water from a safe jumping point or wade in slowly from one of the narrow beach inlets. This area, known as Papafragas, is a cool, craggy stretch of coastline that’s fun to explore or visit for a quick swim before dinner in Pollonia.

Paliorema

Set on the shores of an abandoned sulfur mine, this tranquil stretch of southern beach is cradled by incredible rust-toned rock formations. Ever since the Stone Age, mining for rocks and minerals has been prevalent on the island of Milos. This particular sulfur mine at Paliorema was abandoned – as if in an instant – during the 1950s. Today, the remains of the old mine, coupled with the yellow and orange colored rocks all around, create an eerie but beautiful beach setting.
