Saksun: The Enchanting Faroe Islands Village with Grass Roof Houses

The remote hillside village of Saksun lies on the shores of a tranquil turquoise lagoon cradled by rugged fjords. The enchanting village has 14 inhabitants, loads of grazing sheep, grass-roof houses, and a picturesque church built in 1858.

Located on the northern part of island of Streymoy, it takes just under an hour to reach Saksun from Tørshavn by car. The driving into the village is incredibly captivating as you wind through a valley floor passing countless sheep, waterfalls, and beautiful vistas. If it’s a nice day (keeping in mind the weather changes on a dime), pack a picnic to bring along with you. It’s such a serene setting, but there aren’t many places to pick up food so bring whatever you need with you.

Once you’ve parked your car in the small lot, walk up the small hill to take in the view (and a great picture) looking down from above the grass roof houses. Here, you’ll also find perhaps the most adorable outhouse / public restroom you’ll ever see. Then, make your way down, past the church to admire the view of the lagoon below. Take your time, and explore the different paths around the lagoon and just soak in this magical scene.

Saksun is a fairytale!
