Mmm… we can still smell the salty sea air and taste the sweet honey atop the flakey fried feta at Embourios Taverna. The first two locals we chatted with, upon arriving to Milos, pointed to this restaurant on the map when we asked for recommendations. We’re still not sure if Embourios is the restaurant or just the general name of the tiny settlement of about 3 boathouses plus the restaurant. Either way, seek out ‘Embourios’ on your map (physical maps are sometimes more accurate that Google Maps here) and look for a white and teal lighthouse-looking-thing that juts out into the water.
Best for a long leisurely lunch, Embourios Taverna was one of our favorite dining experiences on the island. The food was great with plenty of tasty fried Greek favorites, fresh fish, and the best ‘fried feta with honey’ we had on Milos. The ambiance, though, is what really gets you. Sitting there on the remote western side of the island with nothing else around, the Aegean sea lapping against the restaurant floor, and not a peep of English floating in the air, we truly felt – just for a fleeting moment – that we, too, were Greek! Alas, we were just a pair of New Yorkers attempting to relax on vacation, but any place that can make you forget about the past and future, for just one moment, is worth a visit in our book!
A perfect morning in Milos would start with an adventure westward to isolated beaches of Tirades, followed by a long, vino-filled lunch at Embourios. Try the zucchini croquettes, octopus, cheese, and fried fish, paired with some crisp white wine or local beer. After lunch stroll around the boathouses or make your way south to the picturesque church set serenely on a little isthmus jutting out in the harbor.
