Medusa was hands down our favorite restaurant on the island of Milos, Greece. Our long, leisurely lunch was so picture-perfect, we went back again the next day. The laid-back open-air taverna sits perched on the northern coastline with that brilliant turquoise Aegean water glimmering just steps away. If you come at prime lunch time, around 2pm, you may have to wait a few minutes for a table. If so, grab a beer and walk down to the waterfront and fishermen’s houses beyond the restaurant. You’re almost certain to stumble upon loads freshly caught octopus hung out drying lines, about to be brought up to Medusa’s kitchen.
The local island cuisine at Medusa is excellent. Order a bottle of crisp white vino and venture beyond your normal seafood order to try something different, like their delicious salt water eel drizzled with olive oil and capers. Everything on the menu, from the Greek salad and bruschetta-style appetizer to the fried zucchini balls and vinegar reduced octopus, is delightfully tasty and fresh.
The area around Medusa, called Mandrakia, consists of picturesque fishing villages and beautiful swimming spots. The restaurant is also close to one of our favorite beaches on the island, Sarakiniko. Spend the morning swimming and watching cliff-jumpers at Sarakiniko, then head to Medusa for a late lunch – and you’ve got yourself a pretty darn perfect day!
