Over 200 miles above the Arctic Circle and an hour outside the city of Tromsø, you’ll find the remote and magical Malangen Resort. Red fishermen-style cabins dot the shore surrounding the main lodge, and the entire property is cradled by the jagged mountains of the Malangen fjord.
The 4-star resort (their 5th star is nature!) is made up of standard rooms in the main lodge, apartments, and cabins, each with views of the majestic Malangen fjord. Minimalist, Scandinavian design echos throughout the accommodations, restaurant, and common areas. Walking into the property, the lobby showcases what you’re there to see – Mother Nature! Floor-to-ceiling windows call you over to stare in awe at the rugged fjord terrain.
One of the first things you’ll notice at Malangen Resort, besides the gorgeous surroundings, is the calm & quiet. Aside from the waves lapping up onto the shore and the crunching of snow beneath your feet, silence truly envelops you. Being so far from the lively city of Tromsø allows you to really reconnect with nature – and yourself.
Whether you enjoy the views from the open air hot tub on property or from the balcony of your fishermen’s cabin, you’ll be in awe of the magic of the unspoiled outdoors. Malangen even has a glass-front sauna and you may even catch the Northern Lights from the comfort of you own warm sauna at night. The scenery is just stunning to soak in, every moment of the day.
Of course, should you decide to head out on an adventure, Malangen Resort has you covered. From fat bike rentals to dog sledding, they offer plenty of activities that will get you moving and allow you to explore the nature all around. The pièce de résistance, though, is witnessing the Northern Lights.
While there are many tour operators offering a ‘chasing the lights’ experience, Malangen Resort offers the best of that experience right there on property. Most evenings during the winter months, you can join the group at the resort’s nearby outpost, Camp Nikka. Just about a 20-minute walk from the main lodge, Camp Nikka consists of several small cabins and a lavvu (a cozy open-air cabin), where a roaring fire warms the air while guests wait for the sky to light up in perhaps Mother Nature’s greatest show. Since there’s little artificial light here (lanterns to light the walk and the fire in the lavvu), you have about an 85% chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis. Malangen Resort’s location makes it truly one of the best places in the world to see the lights!
At Malangen Resort, you feel worlds away from everything…because you are. There is a disarming stillness that forces you to slow down and appreciate the beauty around you. To have such well-curated experiences and a high level of comfort above the Arctic Circle, is truly something special.
Compass + Twine was a welcomed guest of Malangen Resort and thanks then for an amazing experience. As always all opinions are our own.
