Sunshine and good times blanket Spain’s Balearic Islands for most of the year. The beloved island of Mallorca, larger than nearby Ibiza and Menorca, boasts a rugged coastline, lively capital city in Palma, medieval hilltop villages in the countryside, and – of course – that deep blue Mediterranean water shimmering all around. Nestled along the shores in the tranquil northeastern end of the island, you’ll find one of the newest and coolest luxury properties to grace the Balearics in recent years: Hotel Pleta de Mar.
The newest addition to the Torre de Canyamel Luxury Hotels Group, the 5-star Pleta de Mar seamlessly fuses high end with nature into one incredible barefoot-luxury experience. Chic guest-room bungalows are hidden amidst the natural foliage and three epic pools areas make this luxury escape stand out from the crowd.
After an easy 1 hour drive from the airport in Palma, you’ll arrive at the paradise-like corner of Mallorca called Costa de Canyamel. Hotel Pleta de Mar sits right beside its established sister property, Can Simoneta. Both were once centuries old private estates that have been transformed into exclusive, boutique luxury hotels.
With a beautiful ‘refined rustic’ style, Pleta de Mar’s design revolves around nature. Matured olive trees remain in place with structures built around them, colorful indigenous flowers drape atop pergola-covered walkways, and rough wooded foliage grows untouched all around.
Even the smallest guest-room bungalows are huge. Walk through your private gate and into a little cactus laden courtyard. Stepping inside, a raised foyer area looks down at the bedroom with a living area and leads off to the side to the spacious closet area and massive bathroom. Take a dip in the deep white soaking tub or enjoy the fresh air and sunshine in the outdoor shower. Natural tones create a simple, chic ambiance that feels modern, fresh, and airy. Open your sliding glass doors to find a private terrace space and let the outside in with the white drapes fluttering in the wind.
Some of the grander suites even come with their own lovely little plunge pool and scenic private backyard area.
Up by the main building, you’ll find the first breathtaking pool area, surrounded by green grass and white Balinese daybeds. Laze away the day in the Spanish sunshine or hop into the turquoise pool with the Mediterranean sparkling in the distance just beyond. This pool is close to the bar area, so be sure to order “Peter’s Cocktail”, a refreshing herb-driven medley of freshly muddled basil and mint mixed with gin and tonic and garnished with cherry tomato, dry orange, and basil.
Spend another part of your day down by the infinity pool overlooking the sea. The dark navy pool is whimsically carved into wooded cliffside with tiered levels of daybeds set above it, creating an amphitheater-like pool setting that is nothing short of spectacular. From this pool area, you can head further down the path to the rugged, private beach.
The third pool is a serene little plunge pool set with the beautifully landscaped spa oasis. Hop in after your massage or cool off after using the steam and sauna facilities.
The hotel’s restaurant, Restaurant Foc, serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner overlooking the upper pool area with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass walls, which are usually open to the outside. Nothing beats a bountiful breakfast spread with endless fresh fruits and juices when you’re on a island vacation and Restaurant Foc certainly delivers. For lunch, we often choose to dine pool side on some delicious chilled gazpacho or tasty sandwich and salad options. For dinner, Restaurant Foc’s upscale style emerges for a fine selection of meats and fish cooked in their open-fire grill.
To change things up for lunch or dinner, simply walk over to the sister property next door, Can Simoneta. Their terrace restaurant, beachfront, and pool areas are all available for you to enjoy. Can Simonetta also offers fun electric Vespas to rent to zip through the olive groves for an afternoon of fun. Just past Can Simoneta lies the town of Canyamel with a lovely public beach, a great little surf break, and brilliant turquoise water.
With a beautiful natural landscape, chic style, epic pool areas, and the Mediterranean always shimmering in view, the new 5-star Pleta de Mar property is the ultimate barefoot-luxury getaway in Mallorca.
