Sarakiniko Beach: The Moon Beach in Milos Greece

IMG_1152

While we think Milos easily deserves the award for ‘best beaches in Greece’, that title is always up for debate! However, if there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that Milos is home to the most breathtakingly diverse array of beaches within the Greek isles. For instance, Paliorema Beach lies at the foot of an abandoned sulfur mine and is famed for its brilliant rust-toned rock formations, while Tsigrado Beach is a hidden alcove of golden sand and turquoise water surrounded by cliffs and only accessible by ladder or boat. (Click here for: The 7 Best Beaches in Milos, Greece).

But of all 70+ beaches on this small volcanic island, Sarakiniko is our favorite. Its lunar-like terrain mesmerizes from the moment you pull up on the white, chalky parking area.

Getting there

Sarakiniko Beach is located on the northern coast of Milos, just west of the town of Mandrakia. Definitely rent a 4×4 jeep for your stay on Milos. Like many of the great spots on the island, the approach can be quite bumpy!

Arrival

You’ll park on bluff overlooking the coastline. Follow the pathway past the refreshments truck to make your way down to the beach. Bring your own refreshments, because this tiny trunk is all there is!

Walking down the path, you’ll pass some crazy white rock formations and then come upon the cliff’s edge. Here’s you’ll encounter some jaw-dropping views of the rugged moon-like coastline.

The Beach + Cliff Jumping + Swimming Spots

The ‘beach’ is a relative term at Sarakiniko. The only actual sandy beachfront lies at the end of long narrow inlet flanked by smooth rocks – perfect for laying out on – on either side. Sarakiniko is more about the dazzling terrain, chalky moon-like rocks, brilliant turqoise water, and awesome cliff-jumping.

Snake past the little inlet beach to find the best part of Sarakiniko – the cliff-jumping and swimming hole area. Here you’ll find whole world of folks splashing into the water and laying out on the smooth rock face. Obviously jump and swim at your own peril, but the water is so clear and there are usually enough people around to decipher which points are safe to jump in and climb out. Take the plunge and swim about, admiring the unique terrain and craggy caves from the water. There are a few spots to exit, but most swim underneath rocky overhang into the little watering hole that you passed when approaching the area. Here, the waves help propel you up onto the rocks for an easy exit.

Pro tip

Sarakiniko is not far from the village of Mandrakia, which is home to one of the best seaside tavernas on the island – Medusa (read all about Medusa here). We suggest visiting Sarakiniko in the morning, then heading to Medusa around 1pm or 2pm for a picture-perfect, leisurely lunch!
