Oh sweet, sweet Sri Lankan food. If you haven’t ventured into this cuisine yet, do yourself a favor and book a flight to London (don’t worry Norwegian Airlines is shockingly cheap these days) and reserve a table at Hoppers. It’s that good.
Taking lot of inspo from its neighbor to the north, India, Sri Lankan cuisine packs an explosion of warming, spice-filled flavors that sooth the soul and satisfy the stomach.
Sop up divine chutneys and rich caramelized relishes with your dosa. The crepe-like pancake also serves as the perfect vessel to scoop up Hoppers’ amazing hot chicken curry. Other must-orders dishes include the Bone Marrow Varuval and the Lamb Kothu Roti, which is a beautiful medley of lamb, fried eggs, scallions, cabbage, and these little chewy bread bites – if you can figure out exactly what they are, please do let us know! From first bite to last, you’ll be wildly satisfied with every dish that graces your table and you’ll wish there was room in your belly so you could get on ordering. With such rich, dynamic flavors, we’re not sure why there isn’t a Sri Lankan joint like Hoppers in every neighborhood of every city in the world. It’s the age of globalization people – let’s make this happen!
Until then, we’ll just feast ourselves full at Hopper’s in London. The eatery is perfect for lunch or a more casual dinner, but either way you’ll probably want to get a reservation just to be sure you’ll have table. There are two locations, one in SoHo and the other in Marylebone at Christopher’s Place.
Enjoy!
