After exploring lots of places to stay in Upstate New York, we’ve found The Spruceton Inn to be among the most serene and refreshingly country of them all. Situated in the heart of the Catskills, the 9 room motel-style Inn is a two and a half hour drive from New York City, even though it feels worlds away.

Husband and wife owners Casey Scieszka and Steven Weinberg opened The Spruceton Inn in 2014. The property itself has undergone many interesting iterations, from a Dutch farm house in the 1800s to the Schwarzenegger’s Sunshine Valley House most recently. Hopefully Arnold won’t be back, because Casey and Stephen have done a beautiful job of creating a simple yet modern getaway accessible to all.

The first room at the Inn has been turned into a cozy and welcoming bar with a reclaimed wood counter, picnic tables outside, and the Catskill Mountains in the background. The bar is also the check-in area, which we think is a good way to start the experience. In keeping with their simple-luxury motto, the unpretentious guest rooms are decorated in neutral colors and outfitted with nice linens and a comfy bed.

Set in a valley, the property is removed from cell service and covered in stunning purple wildflower fields during the warmer months. In the fall, the foliage changes into electric reds, oranges and yellows all around you. The star-gazing here is unbeatable. Exploring back behind the Inn, you’ll find a creek, which is a reminder of the top-notch fly-fishing available in the area. Four Weber grills are set-up in different locations across the grounds, making it easy to start your own BBQ or join up with fellow guests. Our favorite part – guest rooms are stocked with firewood outside the door to use at any of the 3 fire pits around the property. S’mores, please? Standard rooms range from $69 to $199 per night and vary seasonally.
