Hiking Usery Mountain

Mesa, AZ

No visit to Arizona is complete without a hike or two. Mountains seem to jut up from nowhere in the Sonoran Desert, providing ample options for a morning hike. Year-round, it’s best to get your hike in early, as the temperatures rise quickly and by afternoon, especially in the summer, a being outside can be dangerous if you don’t have enough water. For a safe, fun, and challenging hike, we recommend Usery Mountain Regional Park. The park covers almost 4,000 acres and is covered in beautiful desert plant life as well as great hiking trails.  We opted for the Wine Cave Trail, which takes about 90 minutes round trip, and leads you up almost 3,000 feet to a stunning wind cave.  Bring your water and your camera-  the views are beautiful and you’ll have earned your lunch!

Usery Mountain is nicknamed ‘Scarface’ because of the colorful mineral line that cuts across it.

Jumping Cholla cactus – if you touch this, you’re in big trouble! The spins have reverse barbs and are really painful and tough to remove.
