Set on what might be the most beautiful beach in all of Mexico, The Thompson Hotel in Zihuatanejo is truly a slice of paradise.
Playa La Ropa is one of the most gorgeous stretches of white, powdery soft beach we’ve ever seen and that The Thompson hotel sits right on the edge of the sand is an embarrassment of riches. From your beachfront palapa, you can listen to the waves and order food and drinks right to your chair. The only finger you’ll have to lift is the one holding your book or headphones so help you slip further into relaxation mode.
The architecture of the hotel is so unique, with swirling stucco staircases and terra-cotta tile roofs. The understated beauty of the resort allows the natural beauty of Zihua to really shine.
We were in a Lagoon Suite with two queen beds , which allowed for plenty of space for my husband and our two young children. The open-air ‘living room’, if you will, featured a long comfy couch, two lounge chairs, and a decadent plunge pool in which we spent many hours.
A two minute stroll form our room and we were at the family pool which, because The Thompson knows parenting is hard work, had a swim up bar. We spent the entire day here swimming, sipping margaritas and mocktails, and soaking up the sun.
If you have time, you should absolutely indulge in a spa treatment. We unfortunately did not have time during this trip but the spa looked absolutely beautiful.
There are two restaurants on property, Ceniza and Hoa. We enjoyed most of our meals at the alfresco Hoa and loved that we could hear the sea from our seats. The kids could play in the sand once they finished eating, allowing us to have a (very short! ha!) few minutes to chat by ourselves. On Friday’s the hotel hosts a killer taco night with live music and we loved it. The food was insanely good (and its bottomless tacos so you can order more of whichever ones you liked best), the music was delightful and we got to watch the sky light up at the sun sank below the horizon.
From the moment we checked in until we sadly headed for home, The Thompson Hotel Zihuatanejo was an incredible stay. The service was 5-star and the attention to our kids was very impressive. Everyone was so kind and attentive, almost predicting our needs before we voiced them. It was a dream to stay here and we can’t wait to visit again.
Compass + Twine was a welcomed guest of The Thompson Zihuatanejo and thanks them for a wonderful stay. As always, all opinions are our own.
