In the heart in Hudson, New York, you’ll find a place that refers to itself not as a hotel, or even a B&B, but as a bed for the night and a bar for drinks and dinner.
Wm. Farmer and Sons Boarding and Barroom is a unique operation, equal parts restaurant, coffee shop, and overnight accommodations. Each of the spaces, though separated by rooms, doors and stairwells, are gorgeously curated and cohesive. From the street, three beautiful golden-brown doors offer an Alice in Wonderland-esque memory test; which do you enter for the restaurant? For coffee? For your room?
The boarding portion of Wm. Farmer and Sons features an array of options, including several guest rooms that share a communal bathroom, as well as several private suites. Our suite felt more like a rustic-chic apartment than a hotel room. You enter into a cozy living room complete with a fireplace, whool sofa, plaid blanket throws. Beyond the living space lies the kitchen, with a vintage refrigerator and a trey locally-made snacks and drinks. Off in a side room, and weathered American flag hangs proudly over white-quilted bed. The whole space exudes the same country, artisan-inspired charm for which Hudson is so well known for; it feels like a home away from home.
The restaurant, accented in moody blues and golds, feels immediately welcoming and warm. At the bar, you can enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail while you eye the coveted Pappy Van Winkle bottles lining the shelves.
Dinner at Wm. Farmer and Sons reminds you of a Southern meal; a country ham plate or pimento cheese to start, a juicy burger dripping with sauce for your entrée, and an apple crumble, served hot in a cast iron skillet, topped with honey ice cream for dessert. Farm-to-table is the name of the game here, and most of the ingredients are seasonal and locally sourced. You’re sure to go to bed full and happy after a meal here.
In the morning, before you head out to wander the streets of Hudson or venture out on one of the area’s famous hikes, grab a cup of joe and a blueberry muffin at the coffee shop downstairs, which is open all day.
Perfectly placed, just a few steps from both the Hudson River and Warren Street, Wm. Farmer and Sons is the ideal place for a weekend retreat Upstate. The cozy rooms and friendly staff will keep you coming back and the eclectic town of Hudson will give you plenty to explore.
