Tucked away on Shandelee Mountain in the Catskills, a century-old lodging house has been restored into a retro-chic 9 bedroom B&B by owners Kirsten & Sims Foster – called The Arnold House. Ideal for any New Yorker looking to ‘get away’ for the weekend, the rural retreat offers a spa, tavern restaurant & bar, a sleek and slightly hipster lounge area, and 7 acres of classic Catskills scenery.

We arrived on a dreary Winter’s afternoon, and Justine, the inn keeper, had the fire place going while fresh cookies and some outrageously delicious brownies waiting on the coffee table. Slide into one of the brown leather chairs next to their funky orange-retro fireplace and chat with the other guests who quickly turn from strangers into friends. Tucked away in a chest are dozens of board games and decks of cards – the perfect way to spend an evening inside, while sipping a nightcap from the bar downstairs.

Head up to your bedroom and more of those delectable treats are waiting  to greet you atop an antique desk. Rustic regional decor brings character to the guest rooms, and you’ll sink into the crisp white down bedding at the end of a long day.

Two hours north of NYC, the Arnold House sits in a prime Catskills location. No matter the time of year, Justine knows exactly where to send you for a Catskills adventure. During the warmer months, venture out to some world-class hiking trails, cast your line into a trout-filled creek, and visit local farms for fresh produce and eggs. When it’s chillier outside, go skiing or snow-shoeing, check out the maple syrup farms, visit local towns like Livingston Manor or Roscoe, and pop into a plethora of small craft breweries and distilleries – like Prohibition Distillery in Roscoe. One visit to The Arnold House and you’ll be hard pressed to find a more cozy spot in all of Upstate.

Compass + Twine was a guest of the hotel and thanks The Arnold House for a lovely stay. All opinions are our own.
