For Downtown Manhattanites, Harlem feels like it may as well be in another state all together. Horror stories of subway delays and bumper-to-bumper traffic kept us away for a while but in the end, we had to try Red Rooster. Surprisingly, the subway was super fast, only about 30 minutes from TriBeCa to our stop, just a block from the restaurant. As fans of Chef Marcus Samuelsson, we had high hopes for his newest restaurant. Red Rooster touts itself as a place that serves ‘comfort food celebrating the roots of American cuisine and the diverse culinary traditions of the neighborhood’ , but it also integrates Samuelsson’s Swedish heritage. The unique food combos peaked our interest but the flavors made us fans. Favors of traditional Swedish cooking are seamlessly combined with the neighborhood flavors of Harlem, which pay homage to Southern-American classics like fried chicken and shrimp and grits. Dishes like the Fried Yardbird sit nicely next to Helga’s Spiced Meatballs, while reminding you of home and at the same time, of a place you’ve never been. In spite of the eccentric decor and because of the friendly service, you feel like you might as well be at a friends house, eating one hell of a meal. Come hungry and bring friends because you’ll now doubt want to sample a few good eats.
