Balthazar is the crown jewel of the Keith McNally restaurant empire and one of the most classic and exciting restaurants in the city. The fashionably large space is defined by high ceilings, grand mirrors, and red accents. Always buzzing, the restaurant is a beautiful blend of Parisian charm and old New York glamour. Any time of day, especially brunch and dinner, you will find a stylish and sophisticated downtown crowd enjoying some of the best French fare around. Careful though – don’t get too ensconced with checking out your reflection in one of the many wall mirrors – the grand one in the back left corner recently came unhinged and almost thumped down on an Italian diplomat – zut alors!
The seafood tower is the perfect place to begin, along with their their mouth-watering Warm Goat Cheese and Caramelized Onion Tart. The Onion Soup Gratinée is savory and gratifying and the Steak Au Poivre is a signature dish. Balthazar’s Steak Tartare is served in the classic capers-style and has long been one of our favorite in all of New York. Equally important, the impressive wine selection has all the favorites including a great Sancerre, Chablis, and Haut-Medoc by the glass. Have one of each, of course, if you want to have the full Balthazar experience. Then you can blame us when have difficulty wobbling down the steep, rickety stairs to the restrooms below.
Not to be overlooked is Balthazar Bakery next door. They serve the most amazingly flakey french pastries, breads and desserts.
