New York does a lot of cuisines really well. There’s a fab Italian spot in every neighborhood, deli was born here, and there’s no shortage of great hamburgers joints. For all that delicious food, really good Mexican can be surprisingly hard to come by. So when you do find a spot that really delivers, you take note.
Fonda is one of those places…in fact it’s the place we go when we want good great Meican food. We’ve been known to walk almost 4 miles to their East Village location just to make room for all the food we’re about to take down. The laid back atmosphere lets you know right away that this ain’t no fancy Mexican– who wants fancy Mexican anyways? We digress. Along with chips, the guacamole is served with these warm little tortillas that are just heavenly. You’ll want to eat 4700 of them. You can tell they’re fresh off the press. Get the Frijolitos Con Queso, an order of Esquites (grilled corn), the Conchinita Pibil, and for the love of God don’t you dare walk out of there without getting an order of the Pollo Noeteño. The happy hour is great as well, but watch yourself, the margaritas are potent. You may have to walk home, too. (Read: WILL have to walk home. Or get a cab.)
