Looking at the casual café facade marked by a blinking, florescent “Corner Deli” sign, you’d never be able to guess what an amazing space and authentic Mexican food you’ll find inside. La Esquina consists of 3 separate eateries – a walk-in taqueria, a sidewalk café, and most surprisingly, a basement brasserie that has long been one of the cities most raved about dinner spots. With it’s dim-lighting and party-vibe, the basement brasserie is suggestive of an exclusive underground speakeasy. Reservations can be challenging to get, especially when they seem to selectively pick up the phone. If that’s not your scene though, the laid-back taqueria and outdoor café are preferable to many folks, us included.
Not only is it one of our favorite Mexican spots, La Esquina is also one of the most interesting and innovative restaurants in the city. The chef, Mexico City native Adrian Ramirez, joined the restaurant following stints at restaurants like Tacombi and Dos Caminos. The taquitos, tostados, and quesadillas are all good, and La Esquina a solid choice for it’s staples like guacamole, margaritas, and grilled cheesy corn. Beyoncé and David Beckham think so too.
