The West Texas town of Marfa has been around since the 1800. It was officially founded as a water stop for pioneering railroad workers and their families. But it really wasn’t until recently that Marfa was truly on the map.
While the train still screams through town several times a day, like it has for over a century, Marfa is much better known for its art than its railroad these days.
With tourists flocking to the remote town to view the quirky, minimalist art pieces, fresh contemporary accommodations were needed in town. The site where the new Hotel Saint George stands today is where the historic Hotel Saint George once stood as well. It closed in the 1920s, and the property remained empty until recently.
The newly renovated boutique hotel opened in April 2016, showcasing 55 guest rooms decorated in a comfortable, modern style. The chic design is a fun contrast to the desert landscape outside.
On the main floor, the hotel is home to the Marfa Book Co., a great space to pick up books, original artwork, or a souvenir.
Also on the first level, you’ll also find Bar Saint George and LaVenture. The bar area is ideal for grabbing a drinks and small plates for dinner, or enjoying breakfast while the West Texas sunrise fills the room with morning light.
For an upscale dinner, head inside LaVenture. Featuring rustic dishes like Cast Iron Seared Rib-Eye and Crispy Half Chicken, the restaurant has elevated the area’s cuisine to a whole new level. Both locals and hotel guests are equally eager to snag a seat at the trendy hotel restaurant for a meal they won’t soon forget.
Whether you’ve come to Marfa to take in the local art scene or to spend a few days exploring nearby Big Bend National Park, Hotel Saint George offers a refreshing, modern home base amidst all the local history.
