The Angelika Film Center is so much more than your average movie theater. Yes, they serve over-priced popcorn, and yes, they have the standard, uninspiring movie candy selection. But the SoHo movie house is different. It’s the leading film center in the City to focus on indie and foreign films. With only 5 screens, the space is not overly commercialized and you can always find something inspiring and of quality to watch.
When movies or documentaries are released to a limited number of theaters, the Angelika is undoubtedly one of them. It’s so well regarded as an intimate and respected film center that occasionally films stars (i.e. Jason Batman recently), directors or producers will appear and engage in commentary and Q&A with the audience after the film. Pretty snazzy, eh? Since it’s opening in 1989, the cinema has become “the most successful and recognized art house in the United States”. It’s never a bad choice to catch a film at the Angelika.
Bonus: They have a café upstairs that sells coffee, cookies, pastries, and gourmet foods. And you don’t need a ticket to stop in and enjoy a meal!
