The dumpling class experience at Mimi Cheng’s will be one of the most fun evenings out with friends that you’ve had in awhile. We promise. The small and jovial eatery in the East Village keeps the decor modest and the dumplings masterful. Only four types of dumplings are offered – including the monthly special – which speaks to their effort to keep it simple and do it right.

Lucky for us, dumpling-making is a speciality they want to teach. To really take in the Mimi Cheng’s experience, grab some friends and sign up for one of their Monday night dumpling-making classes. The restaurant closes down completely for the small and intimate 10 person activity. With a glass of rosé or beer in hand, you’ll learn all about Mimi’s fresh ingredients and kitchen process, then gather around the table to try your hand at the funky folding techniques. A friendly competition inevitably develops with your neighbor over who has the best stuffing and folding skills. Once you’ve filled your tray with the pillowy dumplings, the class leader (usually one of the owner sisters) demonstrates how to properly fry and steam your dinner. Then, you feast! Ten people, even as novices, can produce a heap of tasty dumplings; fortunately, they let you take home the extras!

The Cheng sisters brought the eatery to life after having searched high and low across New York City for authentic Taiwanese-Chinese food. Eventually, they realized nothing even came close to their mother’s age old recipe, cooking style and secret sauce. Focusing on quality of the product, the girls created a cute, casual, and delicious dumpling spot – one of the best around.
