First of all “free”, “free”, “free”. It sounds so good cause you rarely get to hear it around here. But beyond the attraction of a free afternoon, kayaking on the Hudson River is an exciting and entertaining activity to do around town that doesn’t involve eating and drinking. Say whaaa?! It’s also a nice little arm work-out to count as your exercise for the day.
The Downtown Boathouse offers the kayaking at Pier 26 in Lower Manhattan. Set along an inlet off the Hudson River Park, all of Manhattan is your backdrop, including a priceless view of the Freedom Tower. With colossal cruise ships passing by and helicopters buzzing above, the kayaking gives you a cool vantage point of the city and a chance to get away from the crowds. When you’re done, you can head a block South to Pier 25 and play mini-golf or have some lobster and beer at Grand Banks.
Free kayaking is also offered uptown by the Manhattan Community Boathouse at Pier 92 and 72nd street.
For more details plus their calendar of dates and times, check out the Downtown Boathouse website.
