Walking the iconic Brooklyn Bridge gives you one of the best vantage points of New York City. The view from Downtown captures Brooklyn, Wall Street, and all the way up to Midtown with the Empire State and Chrysler Buildings. As a tourist or a local, the 1.1 mile stroll is pretty breathtaking no matter how many times you’ve done it.

Dubbed the ‘8th Wonder of the World’, the bridge was completed in 1883 and was the longest suspension bridge at the time – by far. It originally had a toll in order to cross (1 penny by foot, 5 cents for a horse, and 10 cents for a horse and buggy), but Mayor William Gaynor rescinded the fare in 1911.

Walking the brige is one of the best ways to enter Brooklyn, where you happen immediately upon the DUMBO and Brooklyn Heights neighborhoods. The most famous destination for bridge walkers tends to be Grimaldi’s for a slice of pizza followed dessert at Brooklyn Ice Cream.  Our favorite place to head to is the Brooklyn Bridge Park, which sits along the waterfront under the bridge. There are plenty of food and drink options around, and the park is one of the best places to have a picnic and enjoy the backdrop of Manhattan across the East River.
