We came upon this gem of an ice cream shop through the recommendation of a neighbor. What started as a casual summer Sunday evening craving, turned into a quest for the best of the best.
Upon confirming with our neighbor that there sadly is no good gelato in Tribeca, she simply explained that when she wants the good stuff, there’s only one place she’ll go – Biagi in Nolita. The certainty in her voice was intriguing, so 3 neighborhoods over and 1 Citi bike ride up, and we were there.
The tiny Elizabeth Street shop beckons you with its radiant yellow facade. Inside, crisp white walls bring your attention to what you came for – the offering of gelatos and sorbets. Antonio Barros Biagi is the name of the owner, who grew up in Brazil as the son of Italian immigrants. After years of making gelato with his family, he spent 7 years in France and Italy working alongside master gelato producers.
Along the way Biagi developed his own style of gelato that is inspired by his family’s talents in gelato making and influenced by the flavors and climate of Brazil. While artfully maintaining the texture and character of traditional gelato, Biagi’s version is lighter, fresher and better than anything you’ve ever had.
The The Mint Chip is creamy yet refreshing with subtle hints of actual mint leaves – instead of the usual artificial flavoring found at most places. Flavors like Cinnamon, Fior Latte, Passion Fruit, Hazelnut and Acai reflect both his Italian and Brazilian backgrounds. The Pistachio is raved about, and while many of the flavors circulate on the menu, that one seems to have secured a permanent spot.
